Summary (pgs. 162-218)
So all the lynchers form a mob and are like, “let’s go to Sherburn’s house and show him who’s boss”, but as it turns out, Sherburn is the boss and he let’s them know real quick with a speech about how they all have no backbone which is kind of brave given he’s one guy and they’re like, more than one guy. Anyway, turns out he’s right and they all leave his house and then BAM! Now we’re at the circus! There’s this drunk guy who’s trying to get in on all the circus action and the ringmaster is like NO but the drunk guy is like YES. The man jumps off a horse and everyone realizes it’s all a trick and he’s part of the circus. Later, our fav con duo the duke and king are doing Shakespeare and no one gets it, so back to the drawing board! They come back with some stupid show where the king somehow ends up naked which makes the crowd so angry that they want to lynch him (what is with the crowd and lynching Jesus Christ). But before the crowd can lynch to their heart’s content, the duke and king run away with the money! Back on the raft there’s a cute lil moment where Jim is clearly being such a protector of Huck but then he’s homesick and freaking out and plot twist Jim has a daughter (I thought he was like 18 lol oops). Lest we forget Jim is an illegal runaway, the white folk dress him up like a “sick A-rab” to keep all the captors away and end up in a town where some really rich guy has died and the story is apparently his two brothers were supposed to show up to collect their dues. Turns out they haven’t, and no one knows who they are so D and K are like this sounds like a prime scheming situation! So they decide to dress up as the dead guy’s brothers, and now we’ve got a deaf mute and a British guy. They go to the guy’s funeral and con the nieces and it’s all kind of gross and unethical but everyone buys it somehow. They find out what their inheritance is, and they’re all psyched until the actually go to count it and realize that the money is a couple of hundred dollars short. So to make this plan even more convoluted, they replace the missing money from the money they conned through their naked show disaster and then give it all to the dead guy’s daughters to seem extra generous and they go ahead and do that but there’s this one guy who isn’t having it and tells the king he’s “the worst imitation” of a British person ever and the entire town is like ugh what a skeptical butt and to prove that she trusts the (CON AS HECK) men, the daughter gives all the money to the duke and king without a receipt (really, Mary Jane? really?). Flash forward and Huck’s conscience that shows up once in a blue moon reappears and he’s like shoot, guess we can’t rob these nice people after all. So Huck decides to steal it from D and K and hide it and then tell Mary Jane everything, and in the most convenient plot of all time, he overhears where the duke and king are keeping the money while hiding in a closet. So Huck steals the gold and then decides to hide it in the most obvious place- the dead guy’s coffin. The funeral happens and the duke and king are trying to split as fast as possible but then they realize all of their money is gone and Huck blames it on slaves that are long gone since D and K sold them. Mary Jane is sad and pretty and Huck feels guilty and tells her everything and comes up with a whole intricate deal in which the duke and king get majorly duped and the sisters escape with the money and everything is set until the absolute most predictable thing happens: the real brothers show up.

Mischief Managed
Here’s a short recap of what happened before: The Duke and the King sell Jim to a farmer named Phelps, claiming he is a runaway slave and a reward would come if he was turned in. Huck goes to the Phelps house to look for Jim, soon realizing that the Phelps family is Tom Sawyer’s aunt and uncle then Huck pretends to be Tom Sawyer. Soon after this the real Tom Sawyer come for a visit but goes along with Huck’s plan and pretends to be his younger brother, Sid. Now since we are all caught up this section of the reading starts with the boys finding Jim, wanting to set him free. Yet classic Tom Sawyer wants an adventure out of Jim’s escape plan telling Huck this needs to be interesting like the breakouts that he has read about in books. With the escape comes danger, the farmers shoot at them with a bullet landing on Tom’s leg, which sets the escape on pause. Huck looks for a doctor to help Tom, who then turns in Jim and Tom. Then Aunt Sally arrives revealing the true identity of both Tom and Huck, as well as the information that Jim was a freed man all along. Miss Watson had died and set Jim free in her will. Remember the dead man on the floating house? That was important because it was Huck’s father meaning that Huck is an orphan (again). Aunt Sally wants to adopt Huck Finn with the intention of civilizing him, but Huck is not going down that road again. Then he decides to travel westward. THE END.
